Chief Executive

Taft fired Gifford Pinchot, who was an ally of Roosevelt (Taft, William Howard).  Taft later appointed Walter Fisher to replace Richard Ballinger as Secretary of the Interior.  Fisher was Pinchot's ally (American President).

Taft had the idea of income taxes for corporations and businesses.  It was passed as a constitutional amendment in July of 1909 and was quickly ratified because people considered it to be a tax on the wealthy.  In February 1913, it became the 16th Amendment (Taft, William Howard).
Taft also wanted a constitutional amendment that would permit the collection of personal federal income taxes (American President).

Taft also appointed Justices of the Supreme Court.

  • Horace Harmon Lurton
  • Charles Evans Hughes
  • Edward Douglass White
  • Willis Van Devanter
  • Joseph Rucker Lamar
  • Mahlon Pitney
(Taft, William Howard)

Taft also appointed General Leonard Wood as Chief of Staff of the Army (American President).
Taft appointed Henry Stimson as Secretary of War (American President).
Taft also appointed Julia Lathrop as head of the Children's Bureau (American President).
Mahlon Pitney was nominated for a seat in the Supreme Court (American President).

Taft filed a law suit against the U.S. Steel for violating the Sherman Act, by saying Roosevelt let the U.S. Steel buy the Tennessee Coal and Iron Company bu mistake (American President).

                               (Taft, William Howard)

When Taft fired Pinchot, he was letting go of one of the most recognizable officials in the federal government, so he should have known people wouldn't agree with that decision (American President).  The law suit Taft filed also damaged the relationship Taft had with Roosevelt, who's support for Taft was disappearing.  Taft did appoint many people, but he lost support from Roosevelt, which in turn made him loose support from those who agreed with Roosevelt.  He did succeed in making the income tax constitutions 16 and 17, which the Congress almost all agreed with.  This was not the worst of Taft's jobs, but  Chief Executive also wasn't his best.
