Head of Political Party

Taft made Frank Hitchcock the Chairman of the Republican Party.  After a year Hitchcock then became the postmaster general for the Taft administration (American President).

Taft was interested in keeping the party happy and doing what he thought was best for them.  The most important issue of the Republican Party, at the time, was to deal with the tariff, which became the Payne-Aldrich tariff once it was passed.  It didn't meet Taft's hopes, but he thought it was what was best for the Republican Party (Korzi, Michael J).

Taft tried to do what he thought was best for the people as the Head of Political Party, but the people thought he could have done better.  Roosevelt, one who supported Taft in the Beginning would have probably not passed this tariff.  The people thought Taft was going to follow more closely in the foot steps of Roosevelt the he did, leading to some people against him.  Taft did, however, stay true to the Republican Party by appointing the Chairman, as well as making him postmaster general.  In this area Taft had some pretty big shoes to fill because Roosevelt used his influence to get Taft into the Presidency (Taft, William Howard).
